CLINTON — Police discovered human remains Tuesday while investigating a missing person.

Around 11:30 a.m., the Maine State Police and Clinton Police Department found the remains in a field on Route 100, state police said in a statement Tuesday.

The remains were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for identification and to determine the cause and manner of death, Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a news release.

No further information was to be released Tuesday, state police said. The investigation is ongoing.

There was a heavy police presence in Clinton as local police said earlier they were conducting a “law enforcement operation.”

Local and state police were involved, the Clinton Police Department said in a statement posted to Facebook around 1 p.m.

Around 12:45 p.m., five unmarked police cruisers were parked outside a home at 774 Main St., which is also routes 11 and 100.

In a field across the street, several more police vehicles, including a Maine State Police Evidence Response Team truck, were parked several hundred yards away from the road.

The area police were seen investigating is about ¼ mile north from the Benton town line.
