A Kennebunk High School teacher has resigned amid fallout from a social media post he allegedly made in the wake of the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

Richard Klatt, a health teacher at the school, sent his letter of resignation to Superintendent Martin Grimm on Oct. 1, after taking a brief hiatus from teaching.

Grimm acknowledged Klatt’s resignation on Oct. 2. Attempts to reach both Klatt and Grimm for comment were unsuccessful.

The Regional School Unit 21 school district investigated the social media post Klatt allegedly made last month, sending a message to community members on Sept. 11.

“We are actively reviewing the matter and carefully considering next steps,” Grimm wrote.

The post, written by a social media user with the username “rickyklatt,” received “significant attention” from the district, Grimm wrote.

At the time, it was assumed that the post came from Klatt, following Kirk’s killing on Sept. 10.

In the post, the writer says that they “would not feel badly” about Kirk’s death.

“Dude openly supports active genocide, and you want prayers?” it said. “Dude is openly racist, transphobic, is the face of hate rhetoric and misinformation, and you want me to be sad?”

The post then states, “Dude defends school shootings and says, ‘empathy is weakness,’ and you want me to feel bad? Karma will come for everyone in this life or the next one.”

“Rest in hell, Charlie Kirk,” the post concluded.

In his letter to the district last month, Grimm said the district was “handling this matter with the seriousness it deserves.”

“While these situations require patience as we ensure a responsible outcome, please know that our work is deliberate and focused on upholding the standards of our community,” Grimm wrote.

In an email to Kennebunk Now on Tuesday night, RSU 21 School Board Chair Matthew Stratford said he could not comment on Klatt’s resignation.

Kennebunk High School Principal Scott Tombleson also said he was unable to comment, as Klatt’s resignation is a personnel matter.
