As an Augusta resident, I had the privilege of attending a recent Board of Education meeting.
The boardroom has been full lately, with debate surrounding presidential executive orders that conflict with federal and state laws. Emotions have run high (some attendees even wore T-shirts displaying board members’ faces and home addresses), but at-large member Rita Pello — who is running for reelection — continues to balance public input with expert legal guidance.
Unlike her opponent Kelly Smith, Pello brings 10 years of experience in public education — making her the strongest advocate for Augusta’s students. Pello prioritizes listening to students and parents, and she is a familiar face at football games, fundraisers and student-organized events.
As the federal executive branch threatens to withhold funding from schools, Pello respects guidance from lawyers to ensure district policies remain in accordance with federal and state law, rather than making decisions based on personal political beliefs.
