Soren Hummel completed 19 of 31 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns as Bowdoin earned its first win of the season by knocking off Wesleyan, 25-17, on Saturday in Middletown, Connecticut.
Michael Wolfendale had four receptions for 117 yards and a score as the Polar Bears improved to 1-5. Wesleyan drops to 4-2.
Bowdoin scored on its first offensive play of the game when Hummel connected with Wolfendale for a 78-yard touchdown. Wesleyan came back to take a 10-7 lead in the second on a 24-yard field goal from Gage Hammond and a 4-yard scoring pass from Matt Fitzsimons to Donte Kelly in the final minute of the first half.
Bowdoin came out strong in the second half with Hummel connecting with Conrad Babka for a 19-yard score with 9:59 left in the third quarter, then eight minutes later Hummel found Cole Daignault for a 12-yard touchdown.
Fitzsimmons passed to Blake Newcomb for a 6-yard TD with 9:34 left, pulling Wesleyan within 22-17, but Hammond’s 20-yard field goal with 2:41 left made it a two-score advantage for the Polar Bears.
COLBY 13, AMHERST 9: The Mules forced an incomplete pass at their own 3-yard line as time expired to secure a NESCAC victory over the Mammoths in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Colby (3-3) overcame a big performance by Amherst (4-2) quarterback Marek Hill, who completed 35 of 62 passes for 306 yards. Christian Moore had 10 receptions for 114 yards for the Mammoths.
With 3:22 left in the third quarter, Corey Aubuchon blocked a punt and returned it 3 yards for a Colby touchdown, but the Mules missed the PAT and led 13-7. Amherst pulled within four on a safety with 8:41 left.
Miles Drake scored on a 1-yard plunge and the Mules went up 7-0 less than two minutes into the game. The Mammoths tied it 7-7 on Hill’s 11-yard scoring pass to Moore with 6:47 left in the second quarter
WILLIAMS 37, BATES 30: Jon Oris rushed for 198 yards on 25 carries and scored a touchdown, receiver Zach Falls had five catches for 138 yards and three scores and Williams pulled away in the second half for a win over Bates in Lewiston.
The Bobcats jumped ahead 6-0 on Jack Perry’s 31-yard scoring pass to Quinn Carver less than four minutes in. Carver then scored on a 19-yard run with 1:31 left in the first.
Drew Renzella’s 8-yard scoring pass to Falls got Williams on the scoreboard early in the second quarter, but Bates got a 28-yard field goal from Marcos Ruiz and Jack Perry (14 of 26, 288 yards, three TDs) connected with Ryan Gleason for a 28-yard touchdown with three seconds left giving the Bobcats a 23-7 lead at intermission.
Williams struck quickly to start the second half with Renzella again finding Falls, this time for a 76-yard score. A two-point conversion closed the deficit to 23-15. Less than four minutes later Falls hauled in a 46-yard pass from Riley O’Connell before Renzella found Oris for the game-tying two-point conversion.
Renzella completed a 36-yard scoring pass to Henry Machnik on the first play of the fourth quarter to give the Ephs a 30-23 lead. Oris then ran 96 yards for a touchdown with 5:25 left.
Perry and Gleason connected again, this time from 38 yards out, to make it 37-30 with 3:52 left.
HUSSON 48, NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 0: Elijah Garnett rushed for 176 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns as the Eagles (2-4) rolled to a Homecoming victory over the Pilgrims in Bangor.
Husson went up 7-0 with 11:51 left in the second quarter with Max Clark connecting with Cam Holmes on a 12-yard touchdown pass. Clark and Jacob Lenz then hooked up for a 16-yard score with 5:06 left in the first half.
Braydon Trombly returned an interception for a touchdown with 4:41 left in the second quarter. Then a Malcolm McKinnon interception set the Eagles up near midfield and Garnett capped a seven-play, 43-yard drive with a 5-yard rush which pushed the lead to 27-0 with 48 seconds left in the half.
Husson added to its lead in the third with a 31-yard run from Garnett and Jed Lober’s 16-yard run. Logan Baird added a 4-yard touchdown run early in the fourth.
