Susan S. (Stiles) Thomas

WINTHROP – Mrs. Susan S. (Stiles) Thomas of Winthrop passed away on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025, at Central Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. She is the loving wife of Eben B. “Ben” Thomas with whom she shared 69 years of marriage.

She is the daughter of the late Dr. Sidney W. and Mrs. Laura Boynton Stiles, she graduated from Falmouth High School Class of 1952 and the University of Maine Orono, with honorary degrees in Phi Beta Kappa Pi and Sigma Mu Sigma receiving a BA in English in 1956 and her master’s degree in education in 1961.

She taught school in Falmouth for two years. In 1956, she married Ben Thomas in Falmouth and in 1958 they moved to Winthrop where Susan taught at Winthrop High School. In 1964, Susan and Ben founded the Thomas Agency Real Estate and the Thomas Insurance in 1982. Both have been in continuous operation, now owned by their son, Eben A. Thomas.

She was a realtor member of the first Maine graduating class of the Tri State Realtor Institute. In 1977, she was appointed by the Governor of Maine to the Real Estate Commission later serving as its chair.

In 1978, she graduated from the National Association’s Realtor Institute as a Certified Residential Specialist and qualified instructor in real estate practice and valuation, teaching those courses and others at the University of Maine Augusta. She was a 34-year member of the Maine Association of Realtors, past president of MAR, a recipient of the Realtor of the Year Award. She was also past National Director of the National Association of Realtors and received the Maine Association Life Award from MAR.

Locally she was an active member of the Winthrop United Methodist Church, Winthrop Planning Board, a former chair of the Town Council, Trustee of the Charles M. Bailey library and served as a Trustee at Thomas College.

In addition to her loved husband Ben, Susan is survived by her son, Eben A. Thomas and his wife Nicole of Winthrop; her grandchildren, Madelyn P. Thomas and Eben A. Thomas, II; her sister, Patricia Cuccaro, her brother, Dr. Norman S. Stiles of Cumberland Center.

Susan’s visitation will be in the Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop on Friday, Oct. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. Her burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth at a later date.

Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.
