A new scam is targeting Maine veterans via postcards, state officials say.

The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services advised veterans and their families on Monday to be on the lookout for the scam, which claims to be from a “Veteran Giveback Program.”

The postcard suggests veterans may be eligible for a $110 increase to their monthly Social Security checks, along with cost-free dental coverage.

The scam includes a phone number to call, but during those calls, the bureau says, scammers solicit personal information and financial data.

The postcard also expresses urgency by requesting veterans to call within five days — urgency is one sign that a correspondence may be a scam, officials say.

The bureau noted in its advisory that veterans and their families can seek any information about their benefits by calling the bureau directly at 207-287-7020 or visiting its website at maine.gov/veterans.

Scams are on the rise in Maine; over 1,000 scams resembling government entities were reported in the state last year, up from 873 in 2023 and 735 in 2022. Earlier this month, the Maine Secretary of State’s Office warned of two scams that targeted businesses, notaries and marriage officiants.
