Why do I strongly support a red flag law? Because gun violence is the leading cause of pediatric deaths, and states with these laws have lower gun violence rates.
A red flag law, or Extreme Risk Protection Order, streamlines the temporary removal of a firearm from someone who is at risk. Family members can petition a judge for this, which could have prevented the Lewiston tragedy.
The current “yellow flag” law is weaker, slower and cumbersome. Firearms are the most lethal method in suicides and homicides. Limiting access allows a depressed or angry person time to seek help, feel better, cool down and move on. Suicidal teens may feel differently within days.
A red flag law guarantees less tragedy, and we have a chance to enact it in November. Please join me and other medical professionals who support this and vote “Yes” on Question 2.
