WALES — You don’t have to tell the Oak Hill football team what it will take to win Saturday — the Raiders know what’s ahead.

Oak Hill’s past two wins over Freeport — in the Class D South quarterfinals last year and in Week 4 this season — have been by a combined three points. If the Raiders want to extend their season, they’ll have to beat Freeport again in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Stacen Doucette Memorial Field.

Fourth-seeded Oak Hill (5-3) is peaking at the right time, with four wins in its past five games. The Raiders’ losses came against Winthrop, Dirigo and John Bapst — teams that are a combined 21-3. The defeats to the Cougars and Crusaders were by a combined five points.

No. 5 Freeport (5-3) is coming off possibly its best performance of the year in a 35-13 win over Dirigo. Led by a dual-threat quarterback in Andrew Thomas and a bulky offensive line, the Falcons intend to finish the job against Oak Hill after falling just short in the aforementioned matchups.

The winner faces No. 1 Winthrop (8-0) in the regional semis next week.

Keys to a Freeport victory

• Stop P.J. Smith. Whether he’s in the backfield, the slot or the secondary, the Oak Hill senior is one of the most dynamic players in the state. If he has a big game Saturday, the Falcons could be in trouble.

• Offensive rhythm. Freeport’s defense put it in position to win the Week 4 matchup, but the Falcons couldn’t get the scores they needed. Freeport likely needs to find the end zone at least three times Saturday.

Keys to an Oak Hill victory

• Home-field advantage. Doucette Memorial Field is a difficult place to play, and the Raiders are 4-0 there this year. Freeport, meanwhile, is 1-3 on the road with three consecutive losses. That could give Oak Hill an edge.

• Minimize penalties. Playing from behind the chains following flags, coach Chad Stowell said, has been one of the Oak Hill offense’s biggest hindrances this season. The Raiders can’t afford that Saturday.

What they’re saying

• “I think we’re both very similar teams in a lot of the schemes we do. We know we’re going to have to score more than 14 points this time, and we have to be able to contain them and not let them get big plays.” — Freeport coach Paul St. Pierre

• “After the first part of the season, we completely changed as a team; we really stepped it up. I think we’re going to come out here and bring it Saturday, and hopefully we can get a big victory that will have us feeling good going deeper into the playoffs.” — P.J. Smith

• “(Freeport is) definitely a hard-nosed, levelheaded team, and if you make a mistake, they’re going to fire right back at you. … I know they probably have a little bit more size than we do, but it’s all going to come down to who wants it more.” — Braden Dubuc
