Maine’s sole area code will last about another 25 years before running out of numbers, state officials announced Friday.
New 207 numbers are expected to run out in the first quarter of 2050, according to a new report by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, a non-government body tasked by the Federal Communications Commission with overseeing the implementation of phone numbers nationwide.
That’s five years longer than the group forecast in its previous report, issued in April.
“The 207 area code is part of Maine’s identity,” said Philip L. Bartlett II, chair of the Maine Public Utilities Commission.
The code’s ubiquity has inspired hundreds of 207-themed business names, from roofers to barbershops to bounce house renters, according to a review of the Department of the Secretary of State’s corporate records.
For years, Maine officials have warned that the coveted code could be nearing extinction. Two years ago, the code was expected to fill up before 2030, the administrator said.
In a written statement, Bartlett attributed the longer lifespan to “careful number conservation measures and collaborations with the telecommunications industry.”
Last year, the utilities commission approved a plan to free up thousands of 207 phone numbers, a move regulators said could stretch the code’s lifespan for decades.
“May long live the 207 area code,” Bartlett said at the time.
Maine is among the minority of states that have only one area code, though several of its New England neighbors — Vermont, Rhode Island and New Hampshire — share the quirk.
