Key stat: The Black Bears allow an average of 314.6 yards per game, fewest in the Coastal Athletic Association and 20th-best in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Outlook: Maine’s rushing defense allows 138 yards per game, but now faces the strongest running team in the CAA. Stony Brook averages just under 187 yards per game on the ground, led by Roland Dempster, who is second in the conference with 890 yards rushing. Dempster earned career highs in last week’s win over Towson with 40 carries for 181 yards, and he has scored eight touchdowns in his last five games. The Seawolves made a change at quarterback last week, going to redshirt freshman Quinn Boyd, who completed 19 of 29 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown. Stony Brook coach Billy Cosh said his offense’s biggest concern is dealing with Maine linebacker Christian Thomas, who is fifth in the CAA in tackles with 75. Maine safety Devin Vaught is tied for the league lead with three interceptions.
The Black Bears have averaged nearly 32 points per game over their four-game winning streak. Carter Peevy has 1,471 passing yards and nine touchdown passes. With injuries in the backfield, redshirt freshman Rashawn Marshall stepped into the role of lead back and gained 287 yards on 34 carries over the last two games. Wideout Scott Woods has 40 catches for 461 yards and three touchdowns and also is a game-breaking threat as a punt returner, with an 85-yard return for a touchdown in last week’s 35-14 win over Elon.
Of note: Former Maine defensive back Alhaji Kamara has 20 tackles and six pass breakups for Stony Brook. … A win would give Maine its first five-game winning streak since 2018. That season, the Black Bears had a six-game winning streak snapped in the FCS semifinals at Eastern Washington. … At 3-1 in CAA play, the Black Bears are in the hunt for the conference title with four games to play. Rhode Island (5-0) and Monmouth (4-0) sit at the top of the standings, followed by Villanova (5-1) and Maine. Monmouth plays at Bryant this week, while Rhode Island has a bye week.
