TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat field hockey team made program history Saturday when it secured its first berth in a regional final.

Kamryn Chase converted a penalty stroke with about eight minutes left in regulation to help lift the second-seeded Eagles to a 2-1 win over No. 3 Mt. Blue in a Class A North semifinal at Stadium Field.

“”This is not a little thing,” said Mt. Ararat coach Krista Chase. “We talked a little about it, but we didn’t want to put more pressure on the girls. We played for us (Saturday).”

Added Kamryn Chase, Krista’s daughter: “Our team has worked so hard for this. It’s an honor we were able to accomplish what we have.”

The teams were tied 1-1 when Mt. Blue was called for a body obstruction in the circle with 8:08 left in regulation.

The Eagles were awarded a penalty stroke — their first of the season — and Kamryn Chase delivered.

“Honestly, I was nervous,” she said. “There was racing in my head that I can’t miss this. This game depends on me. Then I took a deep breath, cleared my head space, tried not to think about it and just did it.”

Mt. Blue took a 1-0 lead when Kali Judkins scored off a corner with 1:54 left in the first quarter.

“They go ahead there, but there was no hanging heads,” Krista Chase said. “We do talk about that goldfish mentality. We have a breakdown? OK, move on. Let it go.”

Let it go they did.

The Eagles pulled even when Abby Tidwell scored off a corner with nine seconds left in the quarter. Chase assisted on the goal.

Next up for Mt. Ararat is a showdown with No. 1 Skowhegan in the regional final Wednesday at Hampden Academy. The teams played to a 2-2 draw on Oct. 13 in Topsham.

“We have our work cut out for us,” Chase said. “We respect them a ton. We will be the first team in Mt. Ararat field hockey to ever play in a regional final. We will be representing. We have nothing to lose. Let’s see what happens.”
