SKOWHEGAN — Lydia Herrick scored in the first minute of the game, and the Skowhegan girls soccer team rolled to a 3-0 win over Old Town in a Class B North semifinal Saturday afternoon.

“I just kind of ran and tried to skip it and it ended up working out,” Herrick said. “I just wanted to run through the ball.”

Skowhegan (15-1-1), the No. 5 seed, will meet second-seeded Hermon (16-0) in the regional final at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bangor.

No. 8 Old Town ends the season 10-7.

Old Town coach Chris Wesley said it was tough to be down 1-0 so early in the match.

“There’s miscommunication that happens in soccer a lot,” Wesley said. “So we had to kind of get our heads back into it. But in the second half, we played a lot better. We got down to a good team over there, and we just played hard.”

Herrick had another early chance about seven minutes after giving Skowhegan the lead, but Coyotes goalie Oliver Ketch (five saves) stopped her on a breakaway.

Herrick was involved in the River Hawks’ second goal as well. She took the ball wide on a 1-on-1 play and fired a shot at Ketch, who couldn’t corral it in the 6-yard box. Mae Dubois, crashing toward the goal, knocked the ball into the net in the 34th minute.

“Yeah, it was a perfect ball,” Dubois said. “I just knew I had to get there in case the goalie fumbled, and she did, so it worked out.

River Hawks coach Mike Herrick said six of Skowhegan’s seven goals in the postseason have come inside the 6-yard box. He noted that Dubois enjoys crashing in close.

“If I could sum Mae up as a striker, it’s the dirty goals that she is so good at,” he said.

Dubois notched her second goal in the final minute of the first half.

“It’s really important for us to have energy, because once we have energy, we’re unstoppable,” Dubois said.
