HAMPDEN — Mount View and Orono played to penalty kicks during a summer 7-on-7 tournament at Mt. Abram High School. In a preseason match, the two squads played to a tie.

So of course when the two teams met in the Class C North boys soccer final Tuesday night, there was little chance the game was going to end in regulation.

After 110 minutes of play, the game went to two rounds of penalty kicks before Orono pulled out a 3-2 victory in front of a packed crowd at Hampden Academy’s Larrabee Complex. The Red Riots had a 4-2 edge in the second round of penalty kicks, with junior midfielder Mustafa Kallah sealing the victory.

“There’s no better feeling in the world,” said Orono goalkeeper Matthew Allen, who made seven saves.

Orono (16-0-1), the North’s No. 1 seed, will meet defending champion Hall-Dale in the state final at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cony High School in Augusta. The Red Riots were led by sophomore Kohen Corriveau, who scored two goals.

“I told them at halftime, I trusted them and knew we’d win,” said Orono coach Dave Hamel. “We’ve been behind in a lot of games this year. We’ve played in the rain, the sun, the wind. We’ve won in overtime while the other team is a man down. Now we’ve won in PKs. In any way, shape and form, these boys find a way to win. As a coach, they make me look really good.”

Mount View, the No. 3 seed, finished 13-3-1. Tanner Oathout and Victor Ahlefield, both seniors, were the goal scorers for the Mustangs.

Mount View dominated possession throughout the first half, outshooting Orono, 8-1. The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead with 13:33 left in the half when Oathout made a sliding kick from the right of the net that crossed past Allen and into the corner of the goal.

The Mustangs lengthened the lead to 2-0 within the first minute of the second half when Ahleford blasted a shot into the corner of the net.

“Mount View really took it to us for 40 minutes,” Hamel said. “We had to change formation, change a couple of personnel, and our boys responded.”

Orono answered five minutes later when Corriveau netted his first goal on a rebound off Mustangs goalkeeper Aden Hargrove. Eight minutes later, Corriveau found room in front of the net again and slipped a shot into the net to tie the game at 2-2. It would remain deadlocked for the next 56 minutes of playing time.

“Basically, I was just thinking that this is where I need to step it up,” Corriveau said. “I’ve got to help our team. I just left it all out here, we all did.”

“I know we’re undefeated, but we faced a lot of adversity,” Allen said. “We were all confident. The first half wasn’t great and we knew that. But there was no negative this, negative that. We were all uplifting. … We knew we could pull it out.”

The teams tied 4-4 in the first round of penalty kicks. It was 2-2 in the second round before Orono’s Dominic Madore found the back of the net. Allen then stopped an attempt by Mount View’s Grady Feeney, and Kallah clinched the victory.

“It was an incredible game by both teams, we knew it was going to be a battle,” Mount View coach Burn Farris said. “Orono is a well-coached team. It’s hard for our boys, but they played a good game. There’s not much else to say.”

Orono has never won a Class C title. The last time the Red Riots played in a Class C final was 2018, when they fell 2-0 to Maranacook.

“It would mean a lot (to be state champs),” Allen said. “We’ve seen some of the great (Orono) teams that have come through. My brother played on a team that went to (regionals) and they lost. … We know Hall-Dale will be a great opponent; they’ve dominated Class C South. But we’re going to prepare and do our best.”
