ELECTION RESULTS

Maine voters soundly rejected a statewide referendum that would have required photo identification when casting ballots and restricted absentee voting. They also approved a new law to temporarily remove firearms from people in crisis that was put on the ballot after legislative efforts came up short after the 2023 Lewiston mass shooting that killed 18 people. NOMINATION DIVIDES SENATORS

The Senate confirmed a Maine attorney’s nomination to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday, in a party-line vote that divided Maine’s two senators. Joshua Dunlap, who lives in Scarborough and is a partner at Pierce Atwood in Portland, was nominated by President Donald Trump in July, with Republican Sen. Susan Collins in support. Sen. Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, voted against the confirmation. Read more.
