AUGUSTA — Simply put, the Cony football team is rolling.
The top-seeded Rams accumulated 410 yards of offense and cruised to a 59-0 victory over No. 4 Messalonskee in a Class B North semifinal Friday night at Fuller Field.
Cony advances to face No. 2 Fryeburg Academy (6-3) in the regional final next Friday at Edward Little High School in Auburn.
Running back Anderson Noyes had 140 total yards — 92 rushing, 48 receiving — and scored four touchdowns to lead Cony (9-0), while Parker Morin was 15 of 18 passing for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Morin also scored on a 2-yard run in the second half.
“It feels good,” said Morin, a senior. “We were (in the regional final) a couple of years ago but couldn’t get the job finished, but we’re looking to do that this year. We knew what we had to do to get there and I felt like we did that. Hopefully over the next couple of games, we’ll play our best football.”
Added Noyes, a junior: “This team’s pretty special. I’m certainly excited to be playing for this team moving forward.”
The Eagles finished 4-6. In his final game, quarterback Tatum Doucette was 4 of 8 passing for 61 yards. He also had 39 yards rushing on nine carries.
Noyes scored all four of his touchdowns on short distance runs in the first half, two of which came from the quarterback spot in the Wildcat package. Morin added a 3-yard touchdown on a shovel pass to Ethan Demmons to give the Rams a 35-0 advantage at halftime.
“Our line is the best line in the state,” Noyes said. “They work so hard in the offseason, our whole team did. That’s certainly paying off now.”
“All season, we’ve really executed well on offense, in the run game and in the pass game,” said Cony coach B.L. Lippert. “We’ve been pretty balanced. We call plays based on what the defense is doing. (Messalonskee) started off a little thin in the box, so we ran it. Then they loaded the box, so we did some screens and threw the ball over the top a little bit.
“It’s great to have the weapons that we have, and Parker Morin is one of the best players in the state of Maine. He’s a sensational football player. Anderson Noyes is a good running back. We have a bevy of wide receivers, and our line is as good as any in the league. Almost anyone can call plays with these guys and look pretty good.”
Morin added another 2-yard shovel pass for a touchdown to Landen Perry and a 2-yard scoring run in the third quarter, giving Cony a 49-0 lead, before giving way to the junior varsity offense in the fourth. Freshman running back Kingston Cox scored on a 5-yard run.
Cony’s defense was up to the challenge of stopping Messalonskee, led by the play of senior linebacker David Frye, who had a fumble recovery. The Rams held Messalonskee to 124 yards.
Cony’s hulking offensive line, led by senior tackle Bohdy King-Jones and junior guard Diesel Cox, was too much for the Eagles.
“Through nine games, we’ve given up one sack, coming off the goal line against Oxford Hills,” Lippert said. “They’ve done a really good job. Parker gets rid of the ball quickly, too, but they give him some time and slow down that pass rush as well.”
Cony shut out Messalonskee in its two matchups this fall. The Rams beat the Eagles 47-0 in the regular-season opener on Sept. 5.
“We’ll celebrate the win tomorrow, but on Monday we’re 0-0,” Morin said. “You’ve got to look at the next game, one step at a time. We’ll be happy now and get to work on Monday.”
Senior receiver Ben Henke had seven receptions for 71 yards for the Rams, and Filip Graham was 7 for 7 on extra points.
