LEWISTON — Yes, Davan Walker knows Foxcroft Academy has this odd little habit of winning a state title every six years. But the Ponies’ fourth-year coach doesn’t plan on waiting until 2031 to add to the trophy case.
“No, no; we’re going to do it again next year,” Walker said with a smile after Foxcroft capped an undefeated season with a 4-1 victory over Spruce Mountain in the Class C field hockey championship game Saturday at Lewiston High’s Don Roux Field. “It feels good to bring it on back to the community who have supported us.”
The Ponies (18-0) added to titles they won in 2007, 2013 and 2019.
Jaiyde True, who scored twice and is one of only four seniors on Foxcroft’s 22-player roster, also thinks the team’s future is just as good as the present.
“We have a very strong team, a very strong group,” True said. “I think they can go all the way the next couple years if they want it.”
The Ponies played Saturday like a team that wanted to go all the way very badly. After a feeling-out process early in the first quarter, Foxcroft pressured Spruce Mountain (13-4-1) and never let up, holding an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners — 8-3 in the first half. Spruce Mountain defender Ryley Wright and goalie Kyleigh Marcotte pushed away several Foxcroft attempts near the goal to keep the game scoreless. A couple more Foxcroft shots missed the cage by inches.
The Ponies finally broke through with 1:21 left in the second quarter when Jenna Hartford recovered the ball from a scramble and fired it across Marcotte and to her left.
“We came out with intensity and tried to keep that up the whole game,” said True, whose team outscored opponents 103-11. “Also, we really connect well on the field, especially during games like these that are really important. The shots went in and it worked out really well for us.”
True scored Foxcroft’s next two goals, each a laser from the right point following penalty corners. Her first came with 10:20 left in the third quarter, and the second with 13:19 left in the fourth.
“She’s done that a couple times this season,” Walker said, “and we picked up that they weren’t covering her on that right side, so we flipped it to her twice and she knocked it in.”
Spruce Mountain’s Adelle Pease scored with 4:44 left to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Foxcroft’s Kendall Killan restored the three-goal advantage just 1:11 later.
Although it was denied its first state title, Spruce Mountain had an autumn filled with positives. The Phoenix reached its first final since 2018 in a season that included a 1-0 win over Winthrop/Maranacook in the Class C South final, dethroning the four-time defending state champion. Like Foxcroft, Spruce Mountain is a fairly young team and graduates only three seniors.
“We held them off as long as we could and as much as we could,” Spruce Mountain coach Alex Bessey said. “The season was great. We had our ups and downs, just as any high school teams do, but we pushed through it and that’s what got us here today.”
Marcotte made five saves for Spruce Mountain, while Foxcroft’s Lili Bisson stopped one shot.
