Most Mainers can now renew Real IDs online, the secretary of state’s office announced Monday.

The online renewal system was launched Monday by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. More than 70,000 Real ID driver’s licenses are due for renewal in the next year, according to Secretary of State Shenna Bellows.

Bellows said in a written statement that the online renewals will “reduce customer traffic to our BMV branches, helping to open up more availability for in-person services for those who need them and reducing wait times at branches.”

The Bureau of Motor Vehicles is encouraging people whose licenses are due for renewal in the coming weeks to check out the services on the Department of the Secretary of State website. People who made in-person appointments for renewals can cancel those reservations so the time is available for others who need it.

Not everyone can renew a Real ID online, though. Mainers still must visit a BMV office if they’re getting Real ID for the first time, hold a driver’s license in another state or a commercial driver’s license, have changed their name or developed a medical condition since their last renewal, or are not a U.S. citizen, among other exceptions.

Starting this past May, travelers are required to present a state-issued Real ID, passport card or other TSA-compliant identification to fly commercially and to enter certain federal facilities.
