Outlook: The 113th battle for the Brice-Cowell Musket has playoff implications, as usual. For the Wildcats, a win would keep them in the mix for an at-large bid to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. The Black Bears, who were eliminated from FCS playoff contention with last week’s loss to Rhode Island, would love to not only reclaim the musket for the first time since 2021, but knock their biggest rival into the offseason.

UNH is on a four-game winning streak, averaging just over 33 points per game over the streak. Matt Vezza is second in the conference in passing yards with 2,359. Eleven of his 18 touchdown passes have been in the last four games, including five in last week’s 42-14 win at Bryant. Maine’s secondary, led by safety Devin Vaught and corners Vincent Nwachi and Jamaree Gibson, will need to lock in on Wildcat receivers Caleb Burke (50 catches, 701 yards) and Chase Wilson (44 catches, 641 yards). Linebacker Christian Thomas leads Maine with 111 tackles and was in on 19 stops last week. In his weekly conference call, UNH coach Ricky Santos referred to Thomas as a “war daddy” who is effective sideline to sideline.

Maine quarterback Carter Peevy rebounded from a slow start to have a solid season and enters the game with 2,058 yards passing and 199 yards rushing. Sincere Baines (680 yards) and Rashawn Marshall (641 yards) give the Black Bears a strong backfield pairing. Scott Woods leads Maine receivers with 51 catches for 620 yards and five touchdowns. Linebacker Trevor Barry leads UNH with 72 tackles. Defensive tackle Justice Akinmoladun is the Wildcats’ top pass rusher with six sacks.

Of note: UNH has dominated this rivalry in recent years, winning 12 of the last 14, including a first-round FCS playoff game in 2013. … UNH has two Mainers on the roster: Sam Rumelhart, a junior cornerback from Scarborough, and Caden True, a freshman linebacker from Saco. Maine has one New Hampshire native, freshman quarterback Michael McMaugh of Moultonborough. … Both head coaches, Santos and Maine’s Jordan Stevens, played in this rivalry for their respective squads. … A Maine win would give the Black Bears their first winning season since going 6-5 in 2021, and their first season with at least seven wins since 2018, when the team won 10 games and reached the FCS semifinals.
