I believe Gov. Mills is the most electable and, in my view, the best candidate to run against Susan Collins. However, Mills’ age, by the end of a six-year Senate term, is going to be a problem for some voters who are open to replacing Susan Collins. Gov Mills recognizes this and has stated that the most critical period of that term would be the years Trump and crew would still be in office.
I agree with Mills and that brings me to my respectful suggestion: Gov. Mills should pledge that, as long as a Democrat governor is elected in 2026, she would retire from the Senate in 2029 or 2030 and let the governor name a senator to complete her term. In the meantime, perhaps Graham Platner might consider running for Rep. Golden’s seat to gain some valuable experience before running for the U.S. Senate.
