While watching the Ken Burns production “The American Revolution,” a salient and very strong narrative keeps coming through the series. That is, how far we have gotten away from the original intent of the fight for democracy.

It is good to be reminded that the one of the objects of our “original discontent” was we wanted a government run by the people, not delegated by a king’s wishes. The people are the ones who should have their needs advocated for by a Congress and their laws upheld by a Supreme Court.

The president is to be guided by congressional decisions after vigorous debate by representatives of the people. Ken Burns has made this abundantly clear in his series and we should all reaffirm our commitment to get back to government by the people.
