L.L.Bean went big this year for the holiday season, adding a large-scale animated projection on its giant Camp L.L.Bean tent.

The Northern Lights holiday event turns L.L.Bean’s flagship store into a winter wonderland up until Christmas Eve. A Nov. 21 tree-lighting ceremony kicked off this year’s festivities, including the debut of an original 2D-animation projection combining woodland critters with environmental storytelling.

With the retailer’s main building closed for major renovations, much of the store has been moved out into a temporary tent. The changes have had little effect on the annual outdoor holiday events, which include lights displays, a skating rink, fire pits, visits from Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and more.

L.L.Bean tries something new each year during its Northern Lights, this year debuting the Winter Spectacular Projection Show, said spokesperson Jason Sulham. The Camp L.L.Bean tent is being used as a 28,000-square-foot movie screen running a 12-minute animation created by the Portland-based P3 Creative Agency, capturing the spirit of Christmas through a magic star emerging from L.L.Bean’s Bootmobile.

“Aside from a drive-in movie theater, I don’t know that anything like this has been done in the state of Maine,” Sulham said.

The Winter Spectacular Projection Show runs daily from between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. every half hour.

P3 Creative Agency has operated for 15 years, working primarily in advertising and specializing in video and animation for institutions, universities and brands. It began working with L.L.Bean on the Winter Spectacular animation six months ago.

The Winter Spectacular is the third large-scale projection project P3 has done, with the prior ones being for the Portland Museum of Art and The Telling Room.

L.L.Bean’s website also features other events happening throughout the Northern Lights holiday events.
