Thornton Academy senior Connor Ayoob, who led the Golden Trojans to the Class A state championship in November, was named the Gatorade Maine Football Player of the Year on Friday.

Ayoob, a 5-foot-8, 190-pound running back, rushed for 231 yards and four touchdowns to lift Thornton to a 28-0 win over Portland in the Class A final. A week earlier, he ran for 304 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-21 win over Bonny Eagle in the South final.

He finished his senior campaign with a school single-season rushing record of 2,193 yards. He also caught 12 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown.

Ayoob was previously named the MaxPreps Maine Football Player of the Year in November.

He’s the first player from Thornton Academy to win the Gatorade honor since Anthony Bracamonte in 2018.
