Alfie Cognata, Winthrop junior, distance: Winthrop is now part of a co-op with Cony, and Cognata has a chance to earn major points in distance events. His 800-meter time of 2:04.75 at states last year is fourth-best among all returning runners.
Evan Crockett, Messalonskee junior, distance: Crockett, who is the No. 4 KVAC Class A returner in both the mile (4:54.24) and 2-mile (11:20.10), is the latest podium threat for an Eagles team that’s had a number of them in distance events recently.
Alex Bates, Nokomis senior, sprints: Bates set a school record (53.02) and placed second at the KVAC B meet in the 400. He then finished fourth at the state meet (53.76) and should compete for the Class B title this season.
Ethan Demmons, Cony senior, sprints: Even as Cony goes to from Class B to A, expect Demmons to hold his own. His KVAC B times of 6.81 seconds in the 55-meter dash and 23.83 in the 200 rank third among KVAC A returners.
Thomas Hebert, Skowhegan senior, throws: Hebert set Skowhegan’s outdoor shot put record at the Class A state meet with a throw of 49 feet, 8 1/2 inches. With an indoor PR of 49-11, he is Class A’s top-returning thrower at the KVAC and state levels this winter.
Hassan Hobbi, Winslow senior, hurdles/sprints: Hobbi, a Varsity Maine All-State pick in outdoor track, is the Class B favorite in the 55 hurdles and 55 dash as the No. 1 returner in both events. He placed second in those events last winter, in 8.03 and 6.74 seconds, respectively.
Elijah Pelkey, Erskine Academy senior, jumps: Pelkey is one of the top jumpers regardless of class after winning the Class B outdoor triple jump title in the spring with a distance of 40-10 and later competing at New Englands. He also owns Erskine’s indoor long jump record (19-8).
Jacob Steiner, Nokomis senior, throws: Steiner won the KVAC B shot put title last season with a PR of 44-2 1/4. Coach Joshua Hunt considers Steiner the favorite to repeat in that event at the conference meet and says he should compete for a state title as a top-three returning thrower.
Alden Wilkinson, Cony senior, throws: As a junior, Wilkinson was KVAC B runner-up to Jacob Steiner in the shot put with a throw of 42-1 3/4. He did even better at the conference meet outdoors (43-5 1/4).
Logan Wise, Lawrence sophomore, sprints: Wise’s top times in the 55 (6.90) and 200 (24.65) were the fastest of any freshman in Maine last winter. Expect him to push Hassan Hobbi at the KVAC Class B and state meets.
Also keep an eye on: Ashton Bailey, Erskine Academy junior, middle distance/pole vault; Charley Flees, Waterville senior, distance; Jason Deering, Gardiner senior, throws; Ethan Rancourt, Winslow senior, distance/relays.
