SKOWHEGAN — State police were investigating an incident Thursday at a Skowhegan property, although authorities were quiet throughout the day about what they were doing.

Around 11 a.m., three Maine State Police cruisers and an Evidence Response Team truck were parked near a field next to 361 W. Front St., which is U.S. Route 2.

Investigators remained on scene into the afternoon. At the small shop next door, people said police had been in the area since early in the morning but said they knew nothing else about the law enforcement activity.

State police spokesperson Shannon Moss said via email Thursday afternoon only that the agency was assisting Skowhegan police “with an incident.” She said later in the day, around 5 p.m., that further information likely would not be released until Friday.

Chief David Bucknam of the Skowhegan Police Department said the state police are in charge of the investigation and referred questions to Moss.

The property is near the Norridgewock town line. Parked there Thursday morning were two recreational vehicle trailers, several vehicles, a snowmobile and a smaller trailer.

Police also appeared to be gathering throughout the day at the state police barracks on West Front Street, about a mile away.

The state police no longer patrol Somerset County on a regular basis and generally only respond there when local law enforcement requests assistance with major crimes investigations or needs other specialized teams.
