An Orrington infant whose father has been accused in her death had multiple broken ribs, brain swelling and other injuries, according to court records.

Shawn Samuels, 24, was charged with murder in the death of his 3-month-old daughter, Lyla Samuels. She was unresponsive when she was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center on Jan. 16, according to Maine State Police.

Samuels also faces one count of domestic violence aggravated assault and two counts of bail violations. He made his first court appearance Wednesday in Penobscot County Superior Court. It was not immediately clear if Samuels has an attorney.

A judge set his bail at $250,000, according to WABI in Bangor. Samuels is being held at the Penobscot County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 13 for a bail hearing, according to a court clerk.

Police first became aware of Lyla’s injuries after her father called 911 to report that his daughter started choking and spitting up while he was feeding her. He told a dispatcher that “she went limp and she turned blue around her eyes and mouth,” according to an affidavit by state police Detective Denver Roy filed with the court.

Samuels said his daughter was gasping for air and a dispatcher told him to start CPR. Three minutes into the call, the dispatcher heard a crying sound and Samuels said the baby was breathing but not waking up, the affidavit said.

Doctors at the hospital told police Lyla had retinal hemorrhages in both of her eyes that indicated abusive head trauma and she also had multiple rib fractures in different stages of healing, according to the affidavit.

She died on Jan. 18, according to police.

An autopsy performed by Dr. Alice Briones from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the baby died from multiple injuries and the manner of death was homicide, according to the affidavit.

Briones, the affidavit said, found the child had brain swelling caused by an “acceleration deceleration injury,” a significant subdural hemorrhage and posterior rib fractures, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, the baby’s mother, who had been on maternity leave until that week, left for work early on the morning of Jan. 16 and Samuels, who was home alone with his daughter, sent her a series of Snapchat messages and photos to update her on how Lyla was doing. During interviews with police, according to the affidavit, Samuels said he did not believe the baby fell or was involved in any accidents.

“Samuels stated he never shook Lyla Samuels, he was not forceful with her, nor was he angry with her,” Roy wrote in the affidavit.

Samuels told detectives that he “bounced his daughter up and down and he slightly swung her side to side in his arms” when she was upset, according to the affidavit.

“Shawn Samuels stated that that motion was the only logical explanation of what may have happened to Lyla Samuels,” Roy wrote.

According to the affidavit, Samuels told detectives that he did not know how his daughter’s ribs were fractured and denied shaking her.

A spokesperson for the Office of the Attorney General, which is prosecuting the case, said prosecutors do not comment on pending cases.
