West Gardiner residents will have to wait longer to vote on adding two members to the Select Board and hiring a part-time clerk.
That’s because West Gardiner Select Board members failed to sign the notice for Thursday’s special town meeting, board chair Greg Couture said. Since board members were required to sign the notice, officials were forced to postpone the special meeting just a day in advance.
That vote will now be held at a later date.
West Gardiner leaders announced the postponement Wednesday in a message on the town’s website.
“It has come to the Selectboard’s attention that the notice of the Special Town Meeting scheduled for Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 6 PM at the Fire Station was not properly signed,” the announcement stated.
The only signature on the warrant for the town meeting — an official document required by state law to be signed by a majority of the Select Board and publicized by town officials ahead of any town meeting — was the town clerk, Angela Phillis.
The town’s notice to hold the meeting was posted on Jan. 15, exactly seven days before the meeting. If it had been posted even a day earlier, town officials would not have been able to postpone the meeting, because Maine law only allows town meetings to be rescheduled if the postponing occurs within seven days of the meeting notice being posted.
