Taylor West’s Maine Sunday Telegram op-ed about present-day politics (Jan. 18) clarified my thoughts about electing Graham Platner to represent Maine in the U.S. Senate. Some 20 years ago, Platner was unaware of the validity of military women’s concerns of sexism and maltreatment, until he gained increased awareness of the disrespect and abuse many women experience.

Platner now speaks all over Maine, and his statements matter. He supports a health care system that we — and our rural hospitals — would benefit from. He understands working people’s needs, supports labor unions and housing solutions and opposes needless and foolish wars. All of that matters to me.

In these times of cuts to food stamps, child care, health care, jobs and more, can he become a leader we need? I believe so, and favor Graham Platner, as he advocates for what is right. I support his candidacy to become Maine’s newest U.S. senator.
