WATERVILLE — A Fairfield man was arrested early Monday on domestic violence charges following a brief standoff on Main Street that prompted the closure for several hours of the well-traveled street.

The man was charged with domestic violence assault and domestic violence terrorizing, both Class D crimes, after he refused police requests to leave a home at 267 Main St., Waterville police Maj. Jason Longley said later in a news release.

At about 2 a.m., police responded to the home following a report of a domestic dispute, the release says. Officers at the scene developed probable cause to charge the man.

“Unfortunately, (he) initially refused to leave the residence causing a brief standoff,” it says. “As an abundance of caution a small portion of Main Street was shut down to appropriately address the issue, while officers from both the Oakland and Fairfield Police Departments responded to assist.”

Members of the Waterville Police Department Crisis Negotiation Team arrived at the scene and got him to exit the apartment building peacefully, according to Longley, the department’s commander of support services.

At about 6:45 a.m., the man was taken into custody.

“This is no longer an active investigation, and the section of Main Street that was previously shut down has been opened to all vehicular traffic,” Longley said.

The apartment building at 267 Main St. where the standoff occurred is located between Boutelle Avenue and Chaplin Street, just north of the railroad tracks near Railroad Square.
