In a recent statement on social media (Bluesky), Gov. Janet Mills, posting from her Senate campaign account, said, “I will defend you with everything I have.” We shouldn’t accept politicians shirking the last year of their responsibilities to run for a better job, even under normal circumstances — and we are currently far away from normal circumstances.

We need to demand the governor step back from this Senate race and dedicate 100% of her time and energy to the people of Maine, doing the job she was elected to do. At minimum, she needs to instill some confidence in the portion of the electorate that sees this as a conflict and poor decision making on her part. Assuring Mainers that she is willing to walk away from the race if her full attention is needed in Augusta might go a long way.
