Russell L. Hickey

GARDINER – Russell L. Hickey, 90, of Gardiner, passed away on March 14, 2026, at the Maine General Rehabilitation and LTC Assisted Living Unit at Gray Birch following visits from family and close friends.

Russell was born in Gardiner, Maine on Oct. 11, 1935, to Dorothy and Lloyd Hickey. Russell graduated from Gardiner High School and was proud to be a lifelong resident of Gardiner.

Russell married Sandra “Sandy” (LeMont) in June of 1957. Russell and Sandra moved into their home on Cobbossee Stream in 1960. Russell grew up on Cobbossee Stream and remained there for over 80 years. He worked at the S.D. Warren Mill and later worked and retired from the State of Maine Department of Transportation. Russell enjoyed his family visiting Cobbossee Stream and Pleasant Pond, as well as spending time at the family hunting camp on Merry Meeting Bay. Russell enjoyed cutting wood on his property and maintaining the grounds for visitors viewing by land or by boat. He additionally enjoyed visiting friends at the McDonald’s restaurant in Gardiner.

Russell was predeceased by his infant brother Lloyd William Jr. and his wife Sandra.

He is survived by his three children, Dennis and wife Debbie of Florida and Maine, his daughter Denise and husband Timothy of West Gardiner, and son Daniel and wife Lisa of Norridgewock. Russell is additionally survived by his cousin Leon Hickey Jr. “Skip”.

Russell enjoyed time with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, as well as cousins and their families. Gatherings at the Pleasant Pond home often included extended friends and family.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you Woodlands Senior Living of Hallowell, Maine General Rehabilitation and LTC at Gray Birch in Augusta and Maine General Hospice. Russell additionally wanted to thank McDonalds in Gardiner for allowing friends to gather.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Kincer Funeral Home, 130 Pleasant Street in Richmond. Following the service, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church located at 31 Highland Avenue in Gardiner. A family burial will be held later in the spring.
