Two people were struck while outside their vehicles on Interstate 95 in Veazie on Monday evening.
An 18-year-old Bangor woman lost control of her vehicle in snowy conditions and ended up in the median near mile marker 189 on Monday evening, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release Tuesday.
A 54-year-old man from Medford stopped to assist the woman, Moss said, while his wife, who was traveling with him, called 911.
While both the man and woman were outside their vehicles, a 19-year-old woman from Old Town lost control of her vehicle and struck them, Moss said.
Both the Medford man and Bangor woman were thrown down an embankment, Moss said.
Maine State Police responded at about 7 p.m, Moss said, and a preliminary investigation indicates the Medford man may have attempted to shield the Bangor woman during the crash.
The Medford man was seriously injured and is in critical condition, Moss said, while the Bangor woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The woman from Old Town who struck the two also sustained minor injuries.
Speed is not considered to be a factor, Moss said, but the investigation is ongoing.
