I am writing as a distressed Maine citizen who believes deeply in the principles of our democracy and the rule of law. President Trump’s current threats of military action against Iranian infrastructure (actions that would clearly constitute war crimes under international law), as well as his recent social media statements regarding Robert Mueller’s death, are profoundly troubling and demand a forceful response from leaders of conscience.
Now, more than ever, it is imperative that Sen. Susan Collins put country above party and personal interests. Our democracy, and millions of lives, are at stake. Her voice carries weight in the Senate and across the nation. I urge her to speak out unequivocally against these dangerous remarks and actions. Silence or equivocation only emboldens rhetoric that undermines our democratic values and international standing.
Our nation is at a crossroads. History will remember those who stood up for justice, truth and the rule of law. I respectfully ask Sen. Collins to demonstrate the leadership and moral clarity that this moment demands. And, I urge Sen. Collins to take a stand for our country’s principles by publicly condemning these statements, while also urging her colleagues to do the same.
