The average price for a gallon of gas in Maine rose to its highest point in more than three years on Tuesday, as the national average crept up beyond $4.

In Maine, a gallon of regular averaged $3.86, according to data aggregated by motor club AAA. Meanwhile, premium averaged $4.89 per gallon, and diesel cost $5.77 on average. For all three categories, prices were higher Tuesday than they were one month and one year earlier, AAA data shows.

Since the end of February, prices have risen nearly $1 per gallon for regular and premium gas. Diesel prices shot up more than $1.40 in that same time frame.

Prices have risen significantly since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran in late February. Oil prices have swung dramatically in the weeks since, sending shockwaves through stock markets and triggering pain at the pump.

As the war rages on, spilling into the broader Middle East, Iran has closed off the Strait of Hormuz — a vital shipping channel through which about 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas typically flow.

The last time regular gas cost this much was in November 2022. For premium, that prior peak came in August 2022; for diesel, prices were last this high in December 2022, according to archived AAA data.

At that time, gas prices were being driven up by another conflict: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The war led to the highest gas prices ever recorded in Maine, as regular gas hit a record $5.09 per gallon in June 2022, according to AAA.

Nationally, regular gas hit $4.02 per gallon Tuesday on average, passing $4 for the first time since 2022, The Associated Press reported.

Maine’s average price was the 25th highest among the 50 states and Washington, D.C., according to AAA data from this week. In three states — California, Hawaii and Washington — the average price topped $5 per gallon.
