Maine Democrats are fortunate, this year, to have several well-qualified, progressive candidates to choose from in the upcoming primary — a few of whom, if elected, would likely make a very good governor. But among them my clear preference is Troy Jackson, for the following reasons.
Perhaps uniquely among the Democrats, Jackson can win in a statewide general election. He has shown the ability to draw votes from across the political spectrum by being elected repeatedly in increasingly “red” legislative districts. His character and message will continue to resonate with all kinds of Mainers.
Also, Troy has a record of standing up to economic power, entrenched interests and other assorted bullies on behalf of regular folks who struggle to get by in our lopsided economy. He won’t forget who he is and where he came from.
But most importantly, Troy is as genuine a person as I’ve ever met. He is honest and upfront. Not polished, real! Troy tells it like it is, no matter who likes it or not. People may not agree with him on everything, but they always know exactly where he stands. To me, that counts for a lot.
I know Troy’s heart is with Maine’s working people. I trust him to bring that sorely needed commitment to the office of governor of Maine.
