A house fire in Hiram broke out shortly before midnight Friday, leaving one dead and another with serious burn injuries.
Responders rescued an adult male from a blazing 2½-story home on 8 Bobbin Mill Road, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Shannon Moss said in a statement. He was flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland via Life Flight.
Firefighters found a deceased adult woman on the upper floor of the home; her body was recovered by State Fire Marshal investigators Saturday, and her identity has not been released.
Early findings indicate the fire started in the basement, likely due to an electrical malfunction, before spreading to the home’s upper floor.
Randy Cookson, who lives nearby, described a chaotic scene with over a dozen emergency response vehicles from various regional agencies early Saturday morning.
Cookson said his wife woke him around midnight.
“(The home) was fully engulfed when I got up,” he said.
Cookson said the home was occupied at the time, but the status of any occupants was unknown.
Flames were still visible about an hour later when Cookson returned home.
