It is very telling that Sen. Susan Collins’ website does not have a listing for elections or voting rights in its drop-down menu. If Collins really believed that voting should be open to all eligible citizens, she would have a specific category for this important democratic right. I am concerned that she has not read the full SAVE America Act. Is she aware:
- that it could limit voting by many Mainers, especially the elderly, disabled, workers and those living in rural communities?
- that it could require women who took their husband’s name at marriage to get a new birth certificate in order to vote?
- that the SAVE America Act does not recognize the Real ID that Maine adopted in the last few years?
- of the number of Mainers who do not have a passport?
- of the cost to towns and municipalities to re-register voting citizens?
- that she is risks preventing more Republicans than Democrats from voting?
- of the extra burden the SAVE America Act puts on Mainers who will need to drive long distances to reach their town office to re-register to vote?
I recommend that Sen. Collins read the SAVE America Act, listen to her colleague Sen. Lisa Murkowski and vote “No.”
