Orton “Bo” Munro
AUGUSTA – Orton “Bo” Munro, 88, died Friday, April 24, 2026, at Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell following a brief illness. He was born in Cambridge, Mass. on April 2, 1938, the son of the late Burton S. and Caroline L. (Brown) Munro.
Bo was a graduate of Holderness School in New Hampshire and Hamilton College and later earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Maine at Augusta.
He dedicated his career to public service. A U.S. Army veteran, Bo worked for 25 years at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Togus, where he retired as Chief of Adjudication. Following his retirement, he continued his commitment to others by volunteering at the Maine Attorney General’s Office as a Consumer Advocate.
Bo will be remembered for the way he approached life; with intention, practicality, and quiet passion. He was known for his meticulous firewood planning, walking his property in Gilead, near the White Mountains, mapping and harvesting trees, and splitting and stacking wood well into his 80s. He spent vacation time gathering chokecherries and elderberries along the Androscoggin River for his homemade wine, brewed beer in the bathroom and kitchen, and baked bread that became a cherished part of every holiday meal.
He will be remembered for his steady presence, his quiet generosity, and the simple, meaningful traditions he created—leaving a legacy that lives on in the family he loved and the life he built.
He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Heide F. (Lukas) Munro; and his brother, Stevenson Munro.
He is survived by his three sons, Christopher L. Munro and his wife, Sherri, of Norwood, Mass., Stevenson O. Munro and his husband, Sean Kelly, of New York City, N.Y., and Alexander T. Munro and his wife, Phyllis-Anne, of Saco; his grandchildren, Cameron P. Munro and Katelyn F. Munro; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A committal service will be held on June 17 at 12 p.m. in the chapel at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta. A Celebration of Life will follow at the family home of over 50 years.
Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Condolences, stories, and photos may be shared at http://www.plummerfh.com.
