The recent front-page article, “Ranked-choice voting looms large in Blaine House primaries” (Maine Sunday Telegram, April 26, 2026), describes the mutual endorsement and cooperation of three of the Democratic gubernatorial candidates occasioned by the likelihood that no candidate will receive a majority and that the primary will be decided by rank-choice voting. While civility and foregoing negative campaigning are certainly to be applauded, the exclusion of the two other candidates (Nirav Shah and Angus King, III) is troublesome, particularly that of Dr. Shah.
As the article points out, the three cooperating candidates are all long-time Democratic party and Augusta establishment politicians, as well as good friends. It is clear that they are collaborating to elect one of their number, rather than a political outsider like Dr. Shah. But Maine Democrats are rejecting politics as usual (Graham Platner) and are seeking effective leadership and real solutions to problems.
Dr. Shah has proven that he has the background, experience, administrative ability, policy expertise and communication skills to be that effective leader. I urge Democratic gubernatorial primary voters to support the candidacy of Dr. Shah, if not as their first choice, then as their second choice on their ranked-choice ballot.
