I recently met with a very professional employee of Sen. Susan Collins at her Portland office. This person did not convince me that Sen. Collins is being honest about why she supports the SAVE America Act.
Sen. Collins says the SAVE America Act will “improve the security of our federal elections and will help give people more confidence in the results.” I don’t believe that Collins actually thinks that non-citizen voting is a real problem.
President Donald Trump has stated that passing this legislation is necessary to prevent Republicans from losing control in the House and Senate. His Republican backers in Congress agree. To me, this bill is a blatant effort to suppress Democratic voting.
In my opinion, Collins is merely obeying the orders from her Senate Republican leadership and from Trump. She must find the courage to support Maine’s and America’s best interests, and to vote against this act.
