Caleb Vacchiano capped an eight-run rally in the eighth inning with a grand slam, and Southern Maine won its first Little East Conference tournament championship since 2021 by defeating Keene State 11-5 on Saturday in Gorham.
The top-seeded Huskies (30-10) completed an undefeated run through the double-elimination tournament, scoring at least 10 runs in all four games. USM earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Vacchiano also hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning, but USM trailed 5-3 going into the bottom of the eighth. The comeback began with four consecutive singles by Carter Higgins, Mike Anquillare, Kaiden Morin and James Main. Drew Scialdone tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and Evan Baschnagel doubled home the go-ahead run.
After Kyle Douin was walked intentionally to load the bases, Peter Keblinsky was hit by a pitch. Vacchiano then greeted Keene State reliever Dylan Ellison with a drive over the left-field fence that made it 11-5.
Vacchiano’s former high school teammate at Sacopee Valley, Carson Black (7-1), pitched eight innings to earn the win.
