TURNER — Hailey Cyr has done a little bit of everything for Leavitt this season, and Wednesday’s game against Winslow was no different.
When the Hornets needed a spark after going down 3-2 in the top of the third inning, Cyr, a senior, hit a double that scored two runs and gave Leavitt the lead in its eventual 13-3 six-inning, mercy-rule win over the Black Raiders in a KVAC softball matchup.
“Hitting-wise, I wasn’t really trying to do too much,” said Cyr. “My first at-bat of the game was a little rough. I struck out. But then my second at-bat, I hit the double to right center. And honestly, I just tried to stay pretty level on that swing, and (that’s) what happened.”
Cyr also pitched three innings and didn’t allow any hits or runs while striking out three batters.
She wasn’t supposed to pitch, as the Hornets (7-2) were planning to save her arm for Friday’s game against Medomak Valley (9-0), but she took over in the circle in the fourth inning, shortly after her go-ahead two-run double.
“I didn’t think I was going to throw at all in this game, but I knew it was a close game already,” Cyr said. “… I knew the batters I was going to face. I think I faced the top of (Winslow’s) lineup; I knew they all could all hit really hard, so I knew I had to hit my spots.”
How it happened
• Winslow (4-4) nearly took the lead in the top of the first, but freshman shortstop Prestyn Myatt was called out at home. It took Leavitt until the second inning to get things going in the batter’s box, and seniors Gabby Smith and Jordan Boulay each drove in a run to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
• The Black Raiders answered in the top of the third with three runs, thanks to a two-run double from freshman Abigail Kiidli and an RBI single from sophomore Emilee Feyler. But Cyr’s two-run double sparked what turned into a four-run inning for the Hornets.
• Leavitt, which is second in the Class B South Heal point standings, scored seven additional runs across the subsequent three innings. Before the Class C North Black Raiders could close out the bottom of the sixth inning, the mercy rule was invoked.
