Quinn Murphy doubled in two runs and Juju Stevens singled in two more during a five-run sixth inning Wednesday as the University of Maine pulled away to an 11-5 victory against Albany in the first round of the American East baseball tournament at Vestal, New York.
The third-seeded Black Bears (22-30) advanced to the double-elimination portion of the tourney and will take on second-seeded UMBC (28-22) at 3 p.m. Thursday. The teams split six games during the regular season.
Binghamton and UMass Lowell play at 11 a.m., and the two losers will meet in an elimination game at 7 p.m.
Nic Pepe hit a three-run homer that gave Maine a 5-3 lead in the second inning before the five-run sixth finished the scoring.
Winning pitcher Jason Krieger (4-6) gave up 11 hits and five runs in 6 1/3 innings, striking out seven. He threw 127 pitches.
