Three Binghamton pitchers combined on a four-hitter and the Bearcats won the America East baseball championship by defeating Maine 7-3 on a rainy Saturday night in Vestal, New York.
Binghamton (31-20), the No. 1 seed, beat the Black Bears for the second straight day to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. Matt Bolton put the Bearcats ahead for good with a two-run homer in the third inning. Steven Kraus also homered, and Tim Hennig hit a two-run double.
UMaine center fielder Brody Rasmussen tied the game at 1-1 with a home run in the third inning, but the third-seeded Black Bears (24-32) got only one other hit until they mounted a two-out rally in the ninth, scoring on an RBI double by Nolan DeAndrade and a single by Quinn Murphy.
