After the war in Iran began, my teacher asked why the conflict was not being discussed among my peers. Today, political debates are rarely initiated by students and this shift exposes a wider problem among our youth: a significant decline in civil discourse.
Students hesitate to speak about their political beliefs, fearing social ostracization. Many of us believe government will never change, so we disengage. I bring this up to share why I, a young Mainer, support Dr. Nirav Shah as our next governor.
Dr. Shah is not a career politician. He is a public health expert, attorney and economist who, during the pandemic, showed Mainers what true leadership looks like; he proved that disagreement does not have to result in contempt.
A compassionate, independent-minded leader, beholden to no one, is what my generation needs. I urge Maine’s young people to vote for Dr. Shah in the June 9 primary.
