READFIELD — It’s hard for Edward Little boys lacrosse coach Tyler Haskell not to look at the Heal point standings, given how special this season has been for the Red Eddies.
“Edward Little, we’ve never really had a team this good before, and we’re setting (program) records this season with our record and we’re making some noise,” Haskell said Thursday after Edward Little improved to 11-2 by defeating Maranacook/Winthrop, 14-8.
“We’re a team up in the north, but when it comes to playing those teams down in the south, I think if we come out here, we stay out of the penalty box, we play a hard game, I think we can make it interesting. I truly believe in the boys and what they can do.”
Haskell, a Lewiston native, played college lacrosse at both Husson and Central Maine Community College. With one game left in the regular season, his team is ranked fourth in Class A behind three traditional powers — Thornton Academy, Falmouth and Yarmouth.
Coming off a 13-8 loss against Hampden/Bangor last week, Edward Little rebounded against Maranacook/Winthrop (6-6) and dominated on both offense and defense.
“I told the guys going into this game, ‘these guys are good, (Maranacook/Winthrop’s) a good team,’” senior Matt Fecteau said. “I played for Oak Hill last year and they knocked us out of the playoffs last year, so I really wanted to make sure we got this win.”
How it happened
• Edward Little wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as junior Casey Mileikis netted the first of his four goals just over two and a half minutes into the first quarter. The Red Eddies added six more goals before the quarter was over to take a 7-1 lead.
• Maranacook/Winthrop chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter, outscoring the Red Edddies 4-1. Whatever momentum the Hawks established disappeared in the third quarter, when Edward Little scored four straight goals to regain control. The Red Eddies also got an outstanding game from junior goalie Logan Billings, who made 23 saves.
Statistical leaders
• Edward Little: Matt Fecteau (five goals, assist), Casey Mileikis (four goals, three assists), Logan Billings (23 saves)
• Maranacook/Winthrop: Caleb Morgan (three goals, assist), Ethan Chilton (three goals, assist)
Heard it here first
• “We’re focused on MCI/Nokomis at this point, take it one game at a time. We don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves.” — Edward Little coach Tyler Haskell, referring to his team’s regular-season finale on Monday
• “My guys made some foolish mistakes that we’ve got to clean up. If I had 25 guys, I think we’re a 10-3 team instead of whatever we are, 6-6. … If we had a little more depth, we’d be a lot better, but (Edward Little’s) depth got to us.” — Maranacook/Winthrop coach Daniel Brannigan
