UFC fighter Josh Hokit, in a post-match stunt at the White House, made the transphobic and racist comment, “Michelle Obama is a man. Am I right America?” And before he said that, he thanked Jesus.
A phrase new to me, “performative outrage culture,” sums up this scene perfectly. Hokit’s diametrically opposed expressions here represent the face of America today: a sad society where toxic, violent and obscene people glorify a leader who amplifies their voices such that they are now able to dominate regional politics, airwaves, even school boards.
I disagreed with Hillary Clinton’s insults to the voters supporting Trump at the time, but I finally see that she was right, at least about this current wave. This is a basket of deplorables.
