Thomas Walter Reed

RUMFORD – Thomas Walter Reed, 83, died Sunday July 5, 2026, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough after a courageous fight against cancer. Tom resided in Rumford for over 52 years.

He was born in Farmington on May 22, 1943, the son of Walter and Margery (Lier) Reed. He was a graduate of Farmington High School and received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maine at Orono where he began his military service in ROTC. He later served in the US Army and the US Army Reserve where he achieved the rank of Captain.

Tom met the love of his life, Janice Guay, at Thompson’s Restaurant in Bingham in 1966 and two years later they were married. Tom and Jan enjoyed over 50 years of marriage. They loved retirement together, moving to their camp on Pleasant Pond in the summer, visiting Florida, taking many road trips, and enjoying snowmobiling together. They greatly enjoyed taking car cruises and going to car shows.

Tom began his career at the Oxford Paper Company Rumford Mill and retired from Mead Paper as the General Superintendent of the Groundwood Mill and Woodyard after more than 30 years. Tom was an avid sportsman, classic car enthusiast, and snowmobiler. For each of these passions, he loved to tell many interesting stories. He was quite the historian, especially for the Industry/New Vineyard and greater-Jackman regions. Tom was a former Trailmaster and active member of the Rumford Polar Bears Snowmobile Club, as well as serving in his community as a former Rumford Selectman, Finance Committee member, and officer of the North Cove Association. Tom was a hard worker and never sat still. He took great pride in their camp at Pleasant Pond, their home in Rumford, the 1967 GTO, family, and his many friends.

Survivors include his two sons, Eric and wife Kelly, Scott and wife Laurie; grandchildren Natalie Reed, Kyle Reed, Julia Reed, and Gavin Reed; sister Randi (Reed) Birt, brothers and sisters-in-law Jon and Lucy Guay, Steve and Catherine (Guay) Swartz, Wade and Ann (Guay) Gordon; and several nieces and nephews. Thomas was predeceased by his wife, Janice Reed; father and mother, Walter and Margery, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gerard and Helen Guay; and brother-in-law Douglas Birt.
