AUGUSTA — Firefighters were called to Ganneston Drive Monday for an oven fire that started after electricity was restored to a home.

City firefighters were called to the home at 62 Ganneston Drive about 11:15 a.m. by a postal carrier who heard smoke alarms sounding and saw smoke inside a house where no one was home. Augusta Fire Chief Roger Audette said firefighters went into the home and found out the smoke was generated by an oven that had been left on Sunday when the power went out.

“Power was restored today when nobody was home, and the food was burning in the oven,” Audette said. “Smoke detectors provided the notification to get us there and take care of the problem.”

There was no damage, but firefighters spent about 20 minutes venting smoke from the home, Audette said.

The chief said the incident served as a good reminder to make sure appliances are in the off position when there is a power outage.

“Many times we see fires start because stoves are left on when the power goes out, and in some cases, the food, pots and pans are left on the burner or in the oven,” Audette said.
