AUGUSTA — A box truck atop a flatbed wrecker struck the bottom of the Interstate 95 overpass on Civic Center Drive on Tuesday morning, tearing the box off the truck and leaving the road littered with debris.

The accident happened about 9:30 a.m. as Timothy Hudson, 50, of Windsor, driving the wrecker, was hauling a salvage box truck south on Civic Center Drive, according to Augusta police Sgt. Christian Behr. The man was driving for Hudson Towing, of Windsor.

“The entire box from the salvage box truck fell off,” Behr said. “The frame stayed on because it was tied down properly.”

Augusta police issued a summons to Hudson for operating a vehicle over height limits.

Behr said the accident involved no other vehicles. Behr also said the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Division responded and issued several administrative citations to Hudson.

Augusta police issued an alert to motorists in the area about 9:30 a.m. about the slowdown in north Augusta.

About the same time, several vehicles were reported to be sliding off I-95 because of icy roads in the area between Sidney and north Augusta, causing traffic delays.
