The driver of a tractor-trailer carrying crushed limestone was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning following a rollover accident on New Portland Road in Embden, authorities said.
Speed and poor road conditions as snow fell were factors in the crash, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. Lancaster identified the driver of the truck as 37-year-old Francis Grenier of Quebec and said police had not yet determined whether there would be charges in connection with the accident.

Grenier was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan. A hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday there was no information available on Grenier.
The truck was carrying crushed limestone for L. Breton Transport of Marbleton, Quebec, and was extensively damaged in the accident, which was reported just after 9 a.m. near the Anson town line, said Anson Fire Chief Jeremy Manzer. He said Grenier’s injuries were not life threatening.
Crushed limestone is often used in the paper-making process, but can be an environmental hazard when exposed to water, and crews were working to contain any potential spills Tuesday morning, Manzer said. The accident took place just about 20 feet from the Carrabassett River, and crews were still on the scene cleaning up on Tuesday evening.
No limestone was spilled in the accident, but the Department of Environmental Protection responded as a precaution and to help clean up a small amount of fuel that spilled, authorities said.
